Profile

The School of Economics currently comprises four departments: the Department of Economics, the Department of International Economics and Trade, the Department of Finance and Insurance, and the Department of Industrial Economics, along with the Institute of Population Studies.

The School serves as a major participant in the national 2011 Plan Collaborative Innovation Center for Economic Construction with Chinese Characteristics and acts as the lead unit for the Jiangsu 2011 Plan Collaborative Innovation Center for Regional Economic Transformation and Management Change. It hosts several prestigious research institutions, including the Ministry of Education's Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences (the Yangtze River Delta Economic and Social Development Research Center) and the Ministry of Culture's Key Research Base (the Institute of Cultural Industries). Additionally, the School houses two Jiangsu Decision-making Consultation Research Bases, the Jiangsu Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Base (the Research Center for Southern Jiangsu's Modernization), the 985 Project Philosophy and Social Sciences Innovation Platform (the Research Center for Economic Development and Transformation), and the National Base for Training Talent in Fundamental Economics.

Academically, the School holds first-level doctoral degree authorization for both Theoretical Economics and Applied Economics. It offers 6 undergraduate programs, 9 master’s programs (including the Institute of Population Research), 8 secondary discipline doctoral programs, and maintains 2 post-doctoral research stations. Its academic portfolio includes 1 national key discipline, 1 national key (cultivated) discipline, and 1 Jiangsu first-level key discipline. Notably, the Economics program was recognized as a National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Site in 2019.


Faculty and Research Achievements

The School of Economics boasts a dedicated and collaborative faculty with strong academic credentials, many of whom have overseas educational backgrounds. It has 80 faculty members, including 18 recipients of doctoral degrees from overseas institutions, 30 professors, and 31 associate professors. Among them are 2 members (including 1 vice chair) of the Social Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the State Council Discipline Appraisal Group, 2 members of the Ministry of Education Teaching Guidance Committee, 4 Distinguished Professors under the Ministry of Education’s Cheung Kong Scholars Program, 2 recipients of the National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Program, 3 National Teaching Masters, 9 recipients of the Ministry of Education’s Program for New Century Excellent Talents, and 3 Chief Experts of the Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project.

In terms of research achievements, the School has received 4 second-prize awards and 1 third-prize award from the National Humanities and Social Sciences Achievement Awards, over 10 first-prize awards from the Jiangsu Provincial Outstanding Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Achievement Awards, and 4 recipients of the Sun Yefang Economic Science Award (the highest honor in economics in China). It has also produced 4 recipients of the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, 2 recipients of the Huangda-Mundell Academic Award, 1 recipient of the Zhang Peigang Development Economics Award, and 1 recipient of the Liu Shibai Economics Award.


Education and Teaching Excellence

In talent cultivation, the School emphasizes strengthening foundations, focusing on application, cultivating capabilities, and improving quality, producing a large number of economics professionals highly valued by society. In recent years, the School has actively reformed its curriculum and teaching methodologies, introducing advanced economics courses taught by visiting professors from prestigious overseas universities. It has also launched joint training pilot programs with other university departments and organized extensive academic activities.

The Department of Economics and the Department of International Trade are designated as Ministry of Education Characteristic Specialty Construction Sites and Jiangsu Key Majors. Furthermore, the Department of Economics was also recognized as a Ministry of Education Innovation Zone for Talent Cultivation Models. The School has been honored with 1 National Teaching Achievement Award (First Class) and 4 Ministry of Education Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards (Second Class).


Social Service and Impact

The School of Economics is committed to leveraging its intellectual strengths to serve society. It annually hosts the Jiangsu Development High-Level Forum, inviting distinguished scholars, government officials, and business leaders from home and abroad to provide consultation on Jiangsu’s economic development and corporate operations. The forum has been praised by five successive provincial party secretaries as a “think tank,” “advisory body,” and “bridge and Link.” Leaders from all four provincial government bodies attend each forum. The School has also established partnerships with enterprises, undertaking numerous research projects, and many faculty members serve as senior advisors to provincial, municipal, and corporate entities, contributing strategic insights for regional economic development. It has become a key think tank for regional economic growth and government decision-making.
