The Department of Economics at Nanjing University was re-established in 1978.It offers an undergraduate program in Economics, four master’s programs in Political Economy, National Economics, Western Economics, and Quantitative Economics, as well as a doctoral program in Theoretical Economics as a first-level discipline and a postdoctoral research station in Theoretical Economics.

Through more than four decades of sustained effort by its faculty and students, the department has become a leading research hub in areas such as Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, Development Economics, and Digital Economics. The Political Economics program is a National Key Discipline, the undergraduate Economics program is a Brand Specialty of Jiangsu Province, and Theoretical Economics has been selected as a discipline under the second round of the national Double First-Class construction initiative.

The Department of Economics is committed to cultivating first-class economics professionals who master economic theories and methods, possess critical thinking skills, and have a global perspective, a sense of national commitment, and strong humanities grounding. In talent cultivation, the department has achieved a series of notable successes. The Capital and China's Economy Teaching Team has been recognized as a National Teaching Team. The Cluster Construction of Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics Courses won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award. The undergraduate Economics program has been successively selected as a National Base for the Cultivation of Foundational Talents in Economics, a National Featured Specialty of the Ministry of Education, a National Innovation Zone for Talent Cultivation Models, and a National Top-Student Training Program 2.0 Base in Economics.

With the advancement of New Liberal Arts construction and teaching reform, the Department of Economics has also been actively exploring new approaches. The Virtual Teaching and Research Center for Economics was selected among the first batch of pilot virtual teaching and research centers by the Ministry of Education. The Virtual Simulation Experiment on Interest Rates and Inflation was designated as a National First-Class Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Course. Chinese Economic History was selected as a National First-Class Offline Course.

The Department of Economics has a strong faculty. It includes one Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanjing University, one Vice Chair of the Social Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, one member of the Economics Teaching Guidance Committee, one member of the Finance Teaching Guidance Committee, three Distinguished Professors under the Ministry of Education's Cheung Kong Scholars Program, two Chief Experts of the Central Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project, and two co-leaders of the Ministry of Education's Economics 101 Plan courses.
